Danas nam je divan dan…

Stephen Fry - “Happy birthday to GNU”

DCOS/IGF - the day after…

After almost 12h of sleeping I may say I’m feeling great. IGF has been a really precious experience and a chance to meet some very interesting people. Main subject of our rather small meeting was “Open standards”. The full review must wait till I get the full list of participants of IGF. Just for the record, there were representatives of Sun Microsystems, W3C, IPJustice, OSI, CTech, Chile, Pakistan, BSA..etc. We had a really nice day of talks on Open standards and making decisions on IGF’s big meeting in Rio De Janeiro in November…which I hope to attend.:-)

To be honest, the real talks were done in between regular ones – during coffee and lunch breaks. Those were the moments I’ve spent going around, talking to all the people and getting to know my “friends and foes”. Had really nice conversation with representative of Pakistan on Free Software. It was a really nice chance for me to advocate FSFE and Free Software as whole. He was quite interested in it and we spent quite some time discussing. I also got a chance to chit-chat with Susy Struble from Sun Microsystems which was really valuable thing as Georg Greve, president of FSFE , told me afterwards. I also had an opportunity to have a very nice conversation with Robin D. Gross founder and Executive Director of IP Justice an international civil liberties organization that promotes balanced intellectual property law and protects freedom of expression.

The day ended in a pub in center of Geneva. Georg and I weren’t able to make it to dinner sponsored by Sun Microsystems so some of the guys at meeting decided to spend some time with us in the pub. This meant having some quality time with very important people…and as Georg stated, that doesn’t happen very often on such events…I was lucky:-)

That’s it for now…more to come when I get back to Belgrade on Thursday. I’ve notice quite an increase of visitors to my site…almost 1500 in the last 3 days. Very nice. Some of you asked on IM if I made some photos. Sure I did..a lot of photos. Alas, my mind is very lost lately thus I forgot USB cable for my camera…you will have to wait till I get back home.

UN here I come…

In about 6h I’ll be heading to airport and to Switzerland, UN and FSFE. Quite a few of my friends from abroad asked me to keep my future “UN posts” in English so that they may keep track of all the cool things that are to happen in Geneva. So it shall be done.:-) Expect my first UN reports on Monday. I’ll be in Zürich till then so I’ll be just writing about the good time in the HQ of FSFE.

May the Source be with you!:-)

Izgradnja Slobode u Ujedinjenim Nacijama

http://fsfeurope.org/projects/wsis/

http://fsfeurope.org/projects/igf/

http://fsfeurope.org/projects/wipo/

Building Freedom at the United Nations - FSF, UN i ja

Building Freedom at the United Nations

The United Nations (UN) consist of a set of bodies and activities that influence local policy through various means, including the creation and enforcement of global policies. Such global treaties and agreements interconnected with bilateral agreements that are often have their roots in discussions that have touched upon the UN usually override national considerations.

This makes them very powerful instruments, that are created in a painstakingly slow and often non-transparent and unbalanced process that tends to favor large industrial players in the richest countries, and often also go at the expense of small and medium enterprises in these countries.

Being present on this level of global public policy is necessary to be able to detect and shape global trends, to prevent harm through imbalanced legislation, and to inform about Free Software and digital freedom on a global scale. FSFE itself has been active in three fields within UN: World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), Internet Governance Forum (IGF) and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)

http://fsfeurope.org/projects/wsis/

The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was a dual summit UN conference organised by the ITU. Its purpose was to define important cornerstones for the information and knowledge society. FSFE worked with other Civil Society organisations to promote Free Software and digital freedom, sharing of knowledge, and access to information as principles of the digital age.

Activities of the FSFE in the WSIS involved the co-coordination of the global Civil Society working group on Patents, Copyrights and Trademarks (PCT) that also worked on the global Civil Society policy for Free Software and Open Standards. FSFE president Georg Greve also represented the German Civil Society in the German governmental delegation during the first phase of the summit and was thus able to bring crucial perspective also to meetings that would otherwise have been inaccessible.

Today FSFE continues to work in the follow-up of the WSIS, in particular the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) to promote and build upon the outcomes of the WSIS, e.g. the usefulness of evaluating the impact of choice of software models on society and economy.

Internet Governance Forum (IGF)

http://fsfeurope.org/projects/igf/

The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) was established as a follow-up of the Working Group on Internet Governance (WGIG) that was a direct result of an impasse at the November 2005 WSIS summit in Tunis. Unlike other UN activities, the IGF is not a decision-makingbody. It has been established as a public policy dialog forum with strong claims to multi-stakeholder involvement and participation.

The IGF is where issues such as Spam, Cyber-crime, Copyrights, Patents, Trademarks and such are being discussed, and where trends on these issues can be shaped and forwarded to other bodies – either inside the UN or on a different level.

Regulation in all these areas is extremely likely to influence Free Software in various ways, so FSFE follows the proceedings and has helped initiate two “Dynamic Coalitions” inside the IGF, the “Dynamic Coalition on Open Standards” (DCOS) and the “Dynamic Coalition on Access to Knowledge and Freedom of Expression.”

World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

http://fsfeurope.org/projects/wipo/

WIPO is a specialised agency administrating 23 international treaties dealing with different aspects of limited monopolies on knowledge, such as copyrights, patents and trademarks. It is also the place where the global public policy dialog on all these issues takes place, and through which initiatives like software patents have spread.

FSFE is working with other Civil Society groups to promote a reform of WIPO towards a “World Intellectual Wealth Organisation” that does not follow the blind assumption that more monopoly automatically means more innovation or better conditions for society. These treaties and legal instruments are tools, and like all tools should be subject to benchmarking and revision.

In particular we have worked to support the “Development Agenda,” an initiative by many countries around the world to reform WIPO, and supported the work against the WIPO Broadcasting Treaty, which plans to introduce an additional monopoly for broadcasters that would apply independently of and on top of copyright and patent law.

FreeBSD, CD-ROM(DVD) i običan korisnik

Postoje dva načina da koristite svoj CD-ROM.(more…)
